Does anyone know if buying a diamond in the diamond district is cheaper than buying one online?

i have heard that its best to go to the city and haggle, but is it really cheaper to do so than to just buy online? i'd like to hear from someone who has been to the diamond district and who has also looked at online prices.Does anyone know if buying a diamond in the diamond district is cheaper than buying one online?
If you have the ability to be in NYC and choose the right dealer, then yes you can get a good diamond and a good price. But as in online purchasing there are many variables. the wrong place in the district will make you unhappy.

In terms of internet buying, I would avoid eBay. Yes, there are deals there, but the risk factor is very high that something can go wrong. If you insist on swimming in the eBay waters, then you need to only use the sellers that have massive perfect feedback. additionally, I would only buy a diamond that was GIA graded and inscribed. There are Lots of diamond grading companies, but the GIA is the one Most respected and honored for it's grading being actually accurate!

It also depends what you want. Many people think only in terms of size. In reality size is meaningless. There are no less than half a dozen important factors into choosing a diamond. I just bought my wife a diamond to replace one which was stolen. My personal budget was $10,000. I bought a .85 round D color, IF clarity, Ideal cut with excellent specs all the way. I spent $9000 set in platinum. Yes, you can of course get a much bigger diamond for $9k, and one with good specs. Of course $9k can also buy you a brown crystal doorknob size diamond.

There are some reputable dealers online. Blue Nile is a good one. you just have to click the GIA certificate page on the side to ensure the ratings given line up. use the GIA specs given over any the seller gives.

There are bargains to be had. You could even go on Craigslist where often times there are people selling diamonds from divorces or broken engagements and they are willing to sell well under retail. BUT, the biggest thing with these kinds of deals are that you Have to meet at a neutral jeweler to verify quality as advertised before money changes hands. Do not go by any paperwork the person may have. CL has a high incidence rate of scams, so you have to verify in person before paying a dime.Does anyone know if buying a diamond in the diamond district is cheaper than buying one online?
